Losing Your Religion

I was just reading about this weekend's made-for-TV Oxygen movie "Husband for Hire":
A Latina woman must find a suitable Latino man or risk losing her inheritance. In desperation she hires a man from a group of immigrant laborers, but he turns out to be Caucasian. She must turn him into a convincing suitor while fending off her sister's machinations, her father's suspicions, and the man's girlfriend.
And it made me wonder...

How important is/was it to your family that you marry someone who shares your religious or ethnic background?

  • Very important
  • Not important

I think that the poll might be made more helpful/eye-opening if religious and ethnic background were different options. Frankly, my family would welcome someone of any ethnicity with open arms as long as they loved and respected me, but as for religion, well, they would definitely prefer that I choose a Christian. I'm sure many other families are the same in that ethnicity and religion are two seperate issues.

Em, thanks so much for your comment. You make a great point! --Josey

Sounds a lot like "Beau Jest," a play about a Jewish woman who hides her gentile boyfriend by hiring an actor to meet her parents... except the actor's not Jewish either.

The script: http://books.google.com/books?hl=en&id=b2-KiVSVcmEC&dq=%22beau+jest%22&printsec=frontcover&source=web&ots=80KUxDGVd8&sig=IqZKqWPLtbjCRFTHrCAsLBRS08k

It's also a movie, don't know if it has a release date: http://www.beaujestmovie.com/home.html

This is sad. The results show in favor of having the same religious or ethnic background... Being MLK Day, it is even sadder. So much for the "dream"! In my opinion, it just goes to show how much importance we put in a person's status that thier personality. If my hubby was purple with yellow polka dotted Martian who's God was a chocolate dipped raisin (aside from the possibility of being a lunatic ;P) my family would welcome him just the same as a "cookie cutter" image of us and our beliefs. As long as he truly loved and respected me and I felt the same for him, it would not matter that we have different views and heritage. Sadly, not everyone has opened thier eyes and hearts to accepting the differences in others. This is sad.
