Define "Ladylike"

The other day I attended a GE Women's Network event: "Women in Politics: Does it Make a Difference?"  Since this is not a blog about politics—since, in fact, it's called Sex on My Desk, and we all know (perhaps now more than ever) that sex and politics don't mix—I will skip the part where I praise the panelists for their fascinating insight and commentary.  Instead I'll stick to my interaction with a coworker over fancy tea and delicate finger sandwiches before the speakers took the stage:

Me (trying to serve myself fruit, but sending three blueberries flying off the table): "Men overboard!"

Mary: "I'm so hungry.  Is it so un-ladylike if I take three finger sandwiches and two scones?"

Me: "Are you kidding?  Please pass the chocolate."

And that begs the question...

Are you more "ladylike" around men or around other women?

  • Around men.
  • Around other women.
  • I'm always ladylike.
  • I'm never ladylike.

I'm always ladylike (at least, I *try* to be, lol).

I was raised in a blue collar family. While I was taught to be "polite", I really have no clue what "ladylike" is exactly. That seems like a term meant for WASPs and what-not.
